50 Simple Tips to Get More Twitter Followers

Since I’ve joined Twitter in July of 2009, I have really engaged in the world of Twitter. I have also been doing some experiments which I will share with you at a later date. twitter_followersHowever, since my Twitter follower count has been increasing on a daily basis, I have had number of my readers asked me how to get more twitter followers in a short time frame. I thought I would blog about this topic and share it with all of you what I have experienced over the past 6 weeks. I have gained over 5000 followers for @startupbooster within the last 6 weeks.

I will have a more detailed report on how to get more Twitter followers within the next few weeks but here are 50 things you can do to immediately improve your twitter follower count.

Here are 50 Ways to Get More Twitter Followers:

  1. Add an Avatar - Not having an avatar for your profile reduces the chance for someone to follow you. You have to be able distinguish yourself from others and create that brand by adding your own avatar.
  2. Add your Location - Tell people where you are located. Many profiles don’t have the locations and this is a turn off for many of your potential followers.
  3. Add a Website - Do you have a website? Do you have a Facebook profile or any other profile? Add a URL to your previous work or profile.
  4. Add a Bio - Well this is crucial. You must add a personal biography to make sure you convince others to follow you.
  5. Be Honest In Your Bio - Don’t heighten expectation and don’t say you are a “social media expert” and then not tweet often. Say what you are able to do and let others be the judge.
  6. Create a Touchy Screen Name - Don’t use “porn” in your screen name if you want to improve your reputation. You need to come up with a touchy twitter screen name but going with your own personal name or your website name is also a great option. This way you are carrying your brand over to Twitter.
  7. Tweet often; Tweet Regularly - Tweet on a regular basis. Don’t just share what you have to share; retweet what others are saying within your network.
  8. Engage Your Twitter Followers - Engage in conversations with your twitter followers/network. You need to read their tweets and respond to their requests. This will help you grow your Twitter community.
  9. Leverage other Profiles - If you have other profiles or other existing social networks, you should take advantage of that network to increase your Twitter Follower Count. You should mention that you are using Twitter on those profiles or websites.
  10. Blog about Your Account - If you have a blog, you should always write about your Twitter account. In most cases you will be surprised with the amount of new Twitter Followers you will get from a single post.
  11. Write Good Content - Focus on writing good Twitter Content and adding value. People will follow you. If you are just retweeting and not providing anything of value, you most likely will not get a lot of followers
  12. Follow Back - People have different views on this but I strongly believe that you need to follow your followers back. This is a social media and you are here to engage and enjoy each others company. Follow back and gain insights into their world.
  13. Don’t thank each of your followers - Thanking each of your followers one at a time will annoy other users. They will stop following you. It is okay to acknowledge and thank people at times but try to do them in groups or send them a Twitter direct message.
  14. Use a URL shortner - Avoid using your full URL in your tweet. You should use applications like bit.ly or TinyURL to shorten your URLs when posting your tweets.
  15. Post “New Blog” or “Blog Post” front of your tweet - Let people know what you are sharing is a blog post so they can distinguish between that and all other spam or marketing tweets they have to deal with. It will increase your click through ratio as well as to increase your Twitter Followers.
  16. Don’t Use an Unfollow Tracker - People use Unfollow tracking tools to send a message about “so and so stopped following you.” I think it is a waste of your time and those that get to see it when they search your screen name.
  17. Don’t be Shy - Don’t be shy to respond to questions or comments that come your way. It will only help to get your name out there in the public.
  18. Focus on Twitter Shakers - Focus on users with large followers. Work with them and engage them in a conversation so they can retweet your tweets. It will really help you grow faster. They have a large number of twitter followers and when they retweet your tweet, you are really reaching out to a larger audience.
  19. Be Unique - Be yourself! Yes you have to try to distinquish yourself from others on Twitter. There are millions of users using Twitter and if you don’t find a way to distinguish yourself from others, you will be caught in the same bandwagon with everyone else.
  20. Attract Loyal Followers - There are many ways to get high follower count on Twitter but nothing beats having some strong real twitter users following you. They are the ones that will engage you on a conversation and they are the ones that will spread the news.
  21. Tweet During Peak Times - It would be hard depending on where you are located but I figured the peaking hours tend to follow the US population. Twitter tends to peak during the middle of the day or in the early afternoon. You should track it and see when it is good for you and try to tweet often during that time.
  22. Work on Becoming an Authority - If you become an authoritative voice on a topic on Twitter, people will seek you out and they will follow you.
  23. Be Creative - You have to be creative! You should be creative on everything you do on Twitter – i.e. from your avatar to your tweets on Twitter.
  24. Have Fun - Don’t forget to have fun on Twitter. Be real and show people that you have a sense of humor and that you are real.
  25. Work Hard - Yes this is for everyone. You need to work hard just like everything else in order to be successful.
  26. ReTweet! - Yes always retweet good content. It helps you share good content with your network but it also helps you nurture a relationship with the other twitter.
  27. Be Interesting - You need to find a way to entertain your followers but not annoy them. So it is okay to tell them what you are doing and all but find a way to be interesting so they will enjoy what you have to say.
  28. Promote! - Yes you should promote your work but just don’t make promote is all you do on Twitter. Promote your work along with other interesting tweets so that you can get your work in front of many other twitters.
  29. Be Personal - Yes distinguish yourself from the bots! Be personal and share a few stories of your day with the twitter followers.
  30. Be Nice - Yes don’t be aggressive on anything you do on Twitter. Just be nice to people. Answer their questions and guide them to success.
  31. Add ReTweet Button to Your Blog or Website - Yes you should add a ReTweet Button to your content site just like I have on this posting. It will help spread the word about this content as well as attract more users to your Twitter account.
  32. Don’t Spam - This is something you want to avoid from the beginning. If you are posting content on your network, try not to retweet it more than 3 or 4 times throughout the day. Spamming the same content over and over again will only reduce your twitter follower count.
  33. User Twitter Tools - User Twitter tools like TweetDeck to manage your Twitter followers. It will help you save ton of time and be a good Twitter. There are many other tools and you should find the ones that will help you manage your Twitters so you can be more effective in engaging your network.
  34. Add a Custom Background for Your Twitter Profile - The visual impact will have a huge turnaround in your follower count. You can visually convince users to follow you.
  35. Use a Twitter Landing Page - You should consider using a twitter landing page as the URL in your twitter profile. When a user clicks on that url, it sends them to a specific page within your website that will provide more information about who you are, etc. I haven’t done this myself but I have learned from others that this technique will work.
  36. Keep Your Bio Current - Make sure your bio page is updated regularly to reflect what you are up to.
  37. Brand Your Profile Avatar - Use your own photo or use an image that is brandable. It should probably follow the brand of your website or blog. This keeps it consistent and it allows twitter users to trust you.
  38. Reply to Direct Messages - If you get a personal direct message from someone, you need to reply to that message and acknowledge that you have seen it. There are ton of spams on Twitter so you need to learn to distinguish spam from the real direct messages.
  39. Explain ReTweet to Your Followers - Explain to your followers what retweeting is and encourage them to retweet your content. When users retweet your content, your @username will be send to all of their followers. It will help spread your name to many that you don’t get to see.
  40. Learn to User #Hashtags - Learn to use #hashtags on Twitter. Talk about your own passion and #hashtag them so that it can be tracked. You can learn more about #hashtags here.
  41. Start a Contest - Contest to give away a prize of some sort to one of your followers will get you thousands of new followers. If you do a Google search, you will find ton of contest ideas.
  42. Track Your Results - You need to track your results. If you are making a change then you need to know if that change is working. In order to figure it out, you need to track your changes and the follower count increases. I use an excel spread sheet so that I can dump it into a database down the road. I also keep track of it at TwitterCounter.com.
  43. Tell Your Real World Friends about Your Twitter Account - Yes bring Twitter to the real world. Tell your colleagues and friends about your Twitter Account and most likely they are all using Twitter. They will follow you and they will tell their friends and followers to follow you as well.
  44. Track Top Twitter Users in Your Niche - First find your niche if you haven’t already done so using my article that I’ve posted before, Finding Your Niche Market. Once you do that, go to wefollow.com Twitter user directory and search for keywords within your niche. Follow top users within your niche and see what they are tweeting about. See if you can replicate some of what they are doing so you can also attract new followers.
  45. Converse outside Your Network - User twitter search for trending topics and then reply to #hashtags and engage beyond your own network to get your name out to potential new followers.
  46. Include Your Twitter URL in Emails - Include your Twitter URL in your personal emails that you send out to your friends and colleagues. This increases the chance for you to attract new twitter followers.
  47. Learn to Pitch - Learn to Pitch to top twitter users about your content. They may write about your content on their own blog or website and also retweet your content. This will really help you grow your own Twitter follower count as well as promoting your content website.
  48. Add Twitter Friends to Your Website/Blog - Add your twitter follower count and avatars of your latest followers on your blog or website. I have included this on the top right hand side of this blog. I’ve only included this last week and I have seen my twitter follower count increase quickly. It also demonstrates to your blog/website readers your “social proof.”
  49. Proactively Follow Other Users - You should proactively look to follow users within your niche. They will most likely follow you back.
  50. Get Listed in Twitter Directories - Just like website directories, there are Twitter user directories like wefollow.com. You should list your Twitter account in the directory so others can find you and follow you. You should try to pick the category as close to your own niche.

I sure hope this helps you to get more twitter followers. What do you do to get more twitter followers? I may have not included a method you use to get more followers on Twitter. Please share it with my readers.

I love #12 about following back! U wudnt imagine how IMPORTANT this one is. But overall these are amazing tips. U kno them but they’re in the back of ur mind until some genius decides to post it. Thanx!

Guna December 4, 2009 at 11:28 pm

Orlando – You are right. Nothing really beats this if you are going to sustain the numbers, you got to follow back. With Twitter’s list feature, you can then narrow down the group of followers, but you got to follow back… Thanks for the comment.

Thanks for the interesting post; lots of tips here. Always great to learn new things everyday or expand learned things; with that, I would like to introduce a new sprouting tool called Robotir that is an amazing new way to automate your Twitter account. Being active is a vital thing in keeping your followers, once you get them. You want to be active, and make you a popular Twitterer to be able to be ReTweeted and followed endlessly.

Guna December 4, 2009 at 11:29 pm

Emerson – thanks for your comment. I will take a look at your tool. Maybe we can review it here on my blog if your tool is a startup. Let us know.

Great tips. It’s not about the number of followers, it about the quality. I previously wrote a blog about this because people seem to think the number of followers is what matters the most. http://wfapm.com/bY0gd3
