This is the first chapter of a special report, 10 Biggest Challenges Faced by Internet Marketers, that will take you through 10 different aspects of Internet Marketing.

Traffic generation will serve as the topic starter for this special report I’ve promised on making money online. Just like the rest of the topics to be discussed, this topic is very important for everyone interested in making money on the internet. It’s important to know how to generate traffic because it jumpstarts everything that you will need and do to keep your online money making opportunity rolling.

The main challenge with traffic generation is increased competition. Today’s internet marketers are challenged daily by their competitors. Competition has increased pretty much on everything that you can think of. As a marketer you need to be on your toes every day to make sure you are not letting your competition take over your traffic.

What is Traffic Generation?

Traffic generation means getting people to visit a website. Regardless of the field of interest, website visitors are important to keep the website alive. This is even more important for people trying to promote products and services. If you’re going to sell something online or put up a business on the internet, it won’t serve its purpose or even gain publicity if there’s no one to see it.

Traffic generation refers to the execution of different marketing methods which will ensure that people will visit the site. However, if you’re planning on making any sale, it’s important to differ between two kinds of traffic: targeted and irrelevant traffic.

Targeted Traffic vs. Irrelevant Traffic

Getting visitors to your site is one thing but turning them into customers is another. Making money online is all about getting people to buy what you offer; if these people don’t find your site relevant then they won’t pay for anything.

Basically, it’s important to attract people looking for what you offer instead of attracting random visitors who don’t even look for nor need your products and services.

It’s a fact that certain products and services don’t appeal and apply to all consumers. If you’re selling something make sure that you target those who will willingly pay for it or who will find it relevant. You have to target users who fit the market of the product or service you’re offering.

A targeted traffic translates better to sales than millions of random views. To make money on the internet means to deliver products and services to those who are looking for it. There are several ways to get the appropriate targeted traffic to your site.

On the other hand, irrelevant traffic means people randomly dropping by your website. These are visitors that aren’t targeted at all.

As an example, if you have a website that sells baby products and you’ve employed traffic generation tactics by purchasing cheap advertisement on forums, random sites, social media, etc, then I can guarantee you that your conversation rate will be very low. The traffic you are driving to the site is a bunch of random people that probably won’t even have the means to spend any money. Why bother spending money on bringing people to your site if they are not going to buy your product or services?

This is the main difference between a targeted traffic and irrelevant traffic. Social Media marketing also tends to be random traffic unless you target a specific group or forum within a platform.

Below are few examples of how you can target your traffic so you can bring useful traffic to your site and increase your conversion rate.

Creating a blog is one the best ways to ensure that you reach your target market. A blog is a good way to find people who are interested in the same niche. Through a blog, you can either share relevant ideas, thoughts and what you have to offer. Those who are looking for the things in your niche will certainly visit your site.

A blog is also a good way to get links from other sites. If you write good relevant content, then similar websites with the same ideas can suggest your blog as a possible resource of information. As discussed previously, when people search for a certain set of keywords and content idea, search engines will definitely pick up blogs and sites with similar themes. You need to make sure you are using specific keywords related to your niche in your blog postings so that the search engines recognize your blog as an important site for that topic.

A blog is a good way to reinforce the fact that you are concerned in a certain market. Some of the most successful marketers in the field have utilized blog posting as one of their strategies to get the targeted market. You can link your original website in the blog so that people can check it out.

This is one of the best ways to make money on the internet because of several things: publishing a blog is almost free, linking to your own site is easy, and you can also post your own ads on the blog site.

Content Creation and Article Submission

People usually check out these sites and article databases are better at getting articles to show up in search results. In other words, article sites usually rank higher on the search engines because they have so much content and it is updated on a regular basis. So if your article is rich in content, unique and have specific keywords related to your niche embedded in them, then you will most likely be able to get your article ranked higher in search engines for those keywords. Even if you don’t rank high, when linking to your own sites through those articles, search engines will give your own site higher ranking.

In order to achieve that, you need to include backlinks to your website using relevant keywords as the anchor text. This will ensure that you get people that are looking for specific subject over to your main site. Article submission is one of the most efficient ways to constantly update people with your offerings. If you want to make money online then learning how to do such is the best thing to do.

After all most of these article sites are free. It will not cost you any money to post your article on these sites. Why wait to get a decent backlink to your site?

So in summary, they key is to use article directories or sites like HubPages to create rich content related to your niche and link back to your site. This will drive targeted traffic to your site and also help your own site rank higher on the search engines.

Building a Community

Some website owners in fact see the importance of having a good website support group. Having support from sites within your niche is important in a sense that you send traffic back and forth. Also it demonstrates to the search engines that you are an authority within your niche. Be generous when it comes to link building. Link to others and ask them to link back to you. Careful not to overdo it or you will be punished by the Search Man – yes the search engines like Google.

You can join relevant forums and groups and provide relevant content with your signature as the link to your own website. You can also comment on relevant blog postings. Some successful marketers in fact bank on their forum posting task to get the necessary generated traffic. In fact, I do this a lot myself. You will for sure get ton of traffic related to your niche if you spend time on contributing to other forums and groups.

Build Your List – eMail campaign

I’ve spoken about this many times. You need to start building your own list from day one. If you are going to have any site on the internet, you need to start tracking the users and take down their email addresses. Once you have that, start building it and when you have something to offer, blast out an email asking them to check out your product. The conversion ratio on this will be much higher. You know they are already interested in what you have to say, so they will definitely click through to see your promotion page.

There are many ways to build your list. The one that I would recommend is for you to consider writing a report for your niche and giving it away for free. In that report, you should have a link back to your site. In fact many links – a link a page. In order for people to download your report, they should leave their name and email address. Once you have a strong targeted subscription list, you are on your way to success. I use Aweber to capture the leads. They have been around and I have no complaints about them. Yes it does cost money but its well worth it.

Paid Advertisement

Now this definitely is another way to drive targeted traffic to your website but it will cost you. So if you are going to go down this route, make sure your website is optimized and your conversion rate is high when a targeted user gets to your site.

Once you have that in place, make sure your advertising campaigns are well thought out and it targets the crucial keywords for your site. By using relevant keywords to define your campaign, you can narrow your customer base; however, in a highly competitive environment, this can be costly. If you don’t target the users with the right keywords, you will again pay so much money and get not much return.

You can also purchase ads in Ezines and newsletters in your own niche. There are number of different types of ads in this such as to be a sponsor or just a classified ad. There are many sites that offer this as part of their service. Many of them have a large list of potential customers within a niche and all they do is send promotions along for the readers to view and purchase. That promotion can be you and your product. This is a very effective way to market your products or services.

To make money online means you have to sell your products and services to people who need it and will likely need it. For instance, housewives and mothers will definitely be on the lookout for good kitchenware, thus, you have to align your content and marketing tactics to housewives and mothers. This is one of the oldest principles in marketing: targeting a specific group of consumers. This in fact has helped many businesses throughout the years. This will ensure that you get people that are looking for specific subject over to your main site.” I just did that after reading this post, and edited my 2 articles (these are the only two I have written in 3 months, as I mentioned I do not do Article Marketing currently). They have gone for review. Before, they were ‘Click Here’ and not keyword rich.

But I had a question: I saw that some article had 2 to 3 links for the same website in their author bio. I made just one link in an article. What are your thoughts on this?

Got here via Facebook blogbuddy. Traffic conversion is what it is all about. No traffic – no prospects – no customers – no business. Being a marketer I have heard the complaint so many times – I am paying for all this traffic and no conversions. Or I have 1900 Twitter fans and no sales. It is not just about volume (though in a sense sales is a numbers game – still) but it is definitely about quality. As you said targeted traffic not irrelevant traffic.
