Indeed a brilliant move by Google to set the stage for it’s own Chrome OS. Google choose to “security” as an issue to abandon Microsoft.

Here are five reasons why I believe “Security issue” is a cover used by Google to set the stage for Chrome OS.

1. Launch a public stunt against Microsoft - Google has the ability to reach mass market because they can. Look at me, I am taking time to write about it! They are using “security” as the main reason to let the people know that Microsoft sucks.
2. Align with Apple the Next Target – People find it hilarious every time they hear about Apple vs Microsoft. This goes back to the early days when Microsoft was formed by Bill Gates. The theory is that Microsoft stole ideas from Apple and made it better!
3. Release Chrome OS along with Apple to Google’s staff – a way to get the publicity started for Google Chrome OS. If you are employee of Google and you are given the choice between Apple and Chrome, which one would you pick? Chrome of course! Right?
4. Stage Chrome OS as the best alternative – Once tested with the next market’s bigger player (Apple), Google can then publicly choose to abandon Apple. I am sure Mr. Jobs is probably wondering why am I getting this unnecessary attention now? He has the experience to know that it will come back to bite him later. Google will abandon Apple once Chrome OS is ready for mass production.
5. Unleash Chrome OS – It’s that simple. Now all of a sudden, Google Chrome OS is the savior against security breach and people love it!

With Chrome OS just around the corner, it definitely make sense why Google is moving away from Microsoft in a very public way. Google isn’t loosing anything and Apple shouldn’t be celebrating this fame. It will come to an end for Apple as well.

Google TV

Google has announced today Google TV, an Internet-based TV platform that enables you to watch Television in your living room through devices from Sony and Logitech. Everyone loves Television and hence Google is moving into your living room. Google claims on it’s blog, about four billion people across the world watch TV and the average American spends five hours per day in front of one. This is enough for a player like Google to target that market. Google TV was unveiled with Sony, Logitech and Intel as partners.

This new venture by Google is to combine the best of both worlds – the Web and the Television. Each of them have their unique advantage. Web technology still doesn’t beat the quality of the picture presented by an HDTV Television. In the mean time, the Television doesn’t provide you with the flexibility and the freedom of the Web. Google’s idea is to combine the two and provide people with the fullest satisfaction

As an Entrepreneur, who mentor others, I think this move by Google is a smart move. The number I’ve provided you above are the number of new potential audiences for Google. This is enormous and will expand their advertising revenue (which is pretty much their only source of income). Google can reach the entire globe with their unit rather than just individual jurisdictions. Your local cable television provider is bound to certain areas, limitation on their ability to reach rural areas, etc. Google is able to get anywhere there is internet.

Google also claims the Google TV will allow you to not only watch millions of new channels, it will allow your TV to be a photo slideshow viewer, a gaming console, a music player, etc… This means Google TV will pretty much be your entertainment system. Today, I take advantage of Entertainment Media Player, XBMC. XBMC allows me to do exactly what Google is planning to do but I am limited to my local HDTV Antenna channels. However, I can store and view as many Blu-ray quality movies and shows as I want. For this I’ve built a new PC that is acting as my entertainment unit. It also allows me to surf the internet, and everything else my personal computer will allow me to do. Hence, would I consider switching to Google? No, not at the moment.

Google brings it’s on open platforms like Android and Google Chrome to allow many of these functionalities on Google TV. All of this will be built into your Sony and Logitech televisions, Blu-ray players and companion boxes designed by Sony and Logitech. Maybe more to be added down the road. Google TV will be available this fall.

This will be a handy tool for those that doesn’t know how to bring such experience to their television today. As I said, I use my own PC and XBMC to achieve many of these features. I browse the web, watch Youtube videos, watch television and recorded movies, and use any other application as I wish.

Why I am talking about this today on our Statups Website? Well I think this is a new startup for Google and I think from a business perspective, they are headed down the right path. Soon, if Google continues to move this way, we will all replace our operating systems with Google Chrome OS and use Google Android on all of our devices at home. This means, Google will not only know what you are searching on Google.com, they will know what time you wake up, what time you go to bed, what you store in your Refrigerator, and what you watch for entertainment.

Today, TechCrunch reported that Yahoo is playing around with micro-blogging in different languages – Portuguese, Spanish and now in English. This seems to have duplicated some features of Twitter and Tumblr.

However, the site seems to lack some perspective. Not all features seem to be functioning properly and I am confused where to find the English language selection in the first place. It is located at the bottom of the page. It seems like “invite only” approach at the moment but it will be interesting to see what Yahoo has in mind for micro-blogging.

How long will it survive? Well it is a question that I don’t have answers to today but I would assume that it won’t be easy for Yahoo to challenge competitions like Twitter who is now established and growing very fast. It will need a lot more effort from Yahoo’s part to make it to the mainstream.

To me, this seems like a “me too” kind of product launched by Yahoo. I don’t think it will catch the mainstream unless their engineers really roll up the sleeves and get some real engineering done. Something that is going to be unique compared to Twitter and others out there.

Anyhow, we will track Yahoo Meme in our startups to see how far they get to.

Twitter has been having really hard time recovering it seems from the DDoS attack. I am having contantly hard time accessing Twitter today. It is not working and I tried it through proxy and still no luck.

Twitter Status says the following:

“We’re actively working to bring the site back online following an downtime that started a couple minutes ago.”

As you all know, few days ago Twitter was among one of the sites that took the impact of reported geopolitical internet DDOS  attack. The site was down or was very slow for more than 24 hours.

I am not sure if this is happening all over again but if you are relying on Twitter to get your messages out, this may not be a good day.

Is this a Twitter System Failure? Are they not scaled enough to handle such large volume? There are lots of unanswered questions and I will let you decide. Leave a comment if you have something to add.

Twitter Status page just updated that Twitter is facing problems and their service is down. I can’t access it myself for the past 5 to 10 minutes.

Twitter: “We’re working to recover from a site outage and will update as we learn more.”

There has to be only one reason that convinced Facebook to buy the real time aggregator Friendfeed. FriendFeed is really a startup that makes it easy to share with friends. The one reason is that they understood the need for success in today’s information age – that is to provide people with real time information.

Twitter a microblogging platform is leading the way with 140 characters at a time and they are successful at attracting the mainstream to use it. Facebook being the largest social networking site now is moving into social media to keep up with the demand. We should expect to see changes at Facebook shortly with this purchase.

At the end of he day, this is very good news for people like you and me. There are going to be numerous opportunities for new startups in the real time information market. Startups to bridge the gap between competitors or startups to make it convenient for people to use multiple sites.

Within the last few weeks Twitter has updated the look and feel of their website with a more user friendly front page for people to search realtime information. Clearly they are moving towards satisfying the needs of today’s needs for information exchange.

Bing has recently announced that they will be providing relevant realtime information from Twitter so people can search for realtime information. They limited the information being pulled from only a selected individuals but this is expected to expand to all users.

All of this news show that everyone is moving to serve real time fresh information to people.

Twitter, a micro-blogging platform has been down for about an hour and counting this morning. Their status blog post suggests that they don’t even know the cause of it. To quote them, “Site is down – We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly.”

There are rumours on TechCrunch that Facebook and LifeJournal is also down. Some claim they can access Facebook while others are saying they can’t. I am able to connect to Facebook.

I know many of you entrepreneurs plan days ahead to take advantage of their social networks like Twitter or elsewhere to spread your business news or your new blog postings. This has become a daily routine for all of us. However, with Twitter being down, it must be difficult to get your words out.

Here are 5 things to do while Twitter is down:

1) walk over to your colleague in the next cubicle and say hello

2) check your contact list and send an email to your old friend that you forgot due to Twitter (a friend that doesn’t use Twitter)

3) Call your Mother and check up on her

4) Work on a new blog article about your business

5) Send an email to a fellow Blogger and extend your network

You all work so hard to make your business successful but sometimes we forget to network with the ones that are closer to us. Use this opportunity to put your tools down and walk over and say hello to people you interact with in your daily lives. It is important to keep up that network as much as a social network to be successful in life.

Twitter has finally tweaked its web interface. Today Twitter rolled out its new design with their search feature being the center of attention. The new version looks very impressive with trending topics by the minute, hour and day listed right in the front.

Twitter has yet to make money out of this micro-blogging concept. It has recently talked about making the service user friendly to businesses and to the people who have not registered with Twitter. As a startup Twitter has been evolving with the community. i.e. adding the hashtags (#topic). Hastags were not part of the original twitter but when people started using #topic to point to one particular topic, Twitter implemented that function. A good example for future startups. The problem today is that many people don’t understand Twitter and its functions. It is really confusing when you login. You have to learn a few key things before you can use Twitter to its full potential.

Hopefully with this new redesign for the front page, Twitter can begin to make more sense for the business community and other average users.

I have not seen any changes to Twitter’s internal pages. It seems like they have only started off with the front page.

Twitter announced last night that they are doing some in-house cleaning of spam accounts. I’ve shared with you my views on spammy followers on my last post.

Twitter Reports:

For some time, the follower and following counts we display have been incorrect for some folks. We’re soon to push a change that will address this issue. This means that the count you see in your sidebar should match what you see on your follower and following pages.

However, a consequence of this change is that follower counts will drop for some people. In particular, those with large followings may see significant changes as we correct for spam accounts and data inconsistencies. No legitimate followings should be affected—we’re just cleaning up artifacts in the system.

I have not seen much drop on my account overnight but many have reported great loss. Also I have not seen any big drop on top Twitter users yet. Maybe the sweep is still underway. I will report if I see any big dramatic changes.

I think it is a great thing what they are doing. They are doing the work for you. Kudos to Twitter for doing this. If you are focused on building a community for your own business, you want to make sure the followers are as real as possible. You don’t want to have spammers as your followers for the sake of follower count. It has to be “Quality” vs “Quantity” followers. I would rather have 100 quality followers than 100 additional spammers on my account. You want to have real people. Therefore, this housing cleaning at Twitter will help all of you.
