Recently I have been so busy with all the changes that my blog is going through hence I didn’t have a chance to talk about new startups that were submitted through the above site submit section.

I will try to get through all of the requests that are sitting in my inbox within the next two weeks.

Today I want to talk specifically about InfoAfricaNow.com. It is a free online directory specifically for Africa. It has listings in various sectors such as accommodation, finance, art, music, governments and organizations and many others related to Africa.

This website consists of over 15,000 listings so far in less than six months since it was launched. The vision for the founders, Akinyi Adongo and Zahra Haji, of this website is to be resourceful for the continent of Africa. Both Ms Akinyi and Ms Zahra are from Nairobi Kenya.

Their business plan aims at generating profit from advertising and through sponsor listings. Sponsored links will appear at the top of shown results. Some of the other things I would recommend for such site to consider classified advertisement system. If you are planning to go local, region by region, in Africa, you should consider adding classified advertisement option. This would bring in additional revenue.

According to the founders, “InfoAfricaNow.com came about as a result of lack of information on Africa on the internet. Less than 1 percent of the content discussed and written about on the web is about Africa. We wish to change this by providing a portal which conveys relevant and necessary information on Africa. We update our website daily, and are constantly on the lookout for what is new in Africa, unlike most other African websites which are rarely updated.” I am not too familiar with African websites, but the key to be successful with any website is to keep it current and up to date.

I’ve asked them about their plan for marketing. They are using social media, email campaigns and word of mouth. They also take advantage of local publications and advertise their website.

Although there are many directories on the internet, this seems to be headed in the right direction to be a local directory services for Africa which will allow people like you and I to find relevant information regarding Africa and the countries within it.

Visit: InfoAfricaNow.com

I came across a blog post by Seth Godin today – Simple five step plan for just about everyone and everything. It was a simple post with few lines but he is absolutely right. This goes to all of the entrepreneurs out there – if you want to be successful, then you might as well follow the following five steps that Seth talks about.

Go, make something happen.

Do work you’re proud of.

Treat people with respect.

Make big promises and keep them.

Ship it out the door.

Go, make something happen

It is not difficult to understand this. Why are you trying to be an entrepreneur if you are not going to make something happen? You have to have the passion to succeed on the things you are trying to do. If you are not going to make something happen, then move on to something else.

Do work you’re proud of

Success comes from passion. If you are not proud of the work you are doing, then it is time for you to move on to something else. As an entrepreneur, you have to be passionate about what you are about to do. If you are not, then you will most likely fail.

Treat people with respect

A must in my dictionary. People you deal with today could be your business partners tomorrow. You have to treat everyone with respect. Otherwise it will come and bite you when you really need their support.

Make big promises and keep them

Well don’t make promises if you can’t keep them. It is simple as that. You have to be able to make promises and keep them. If you don’t, people tend to distrust you. You will not gain their trust when you need help for yourself. If you want to create a good reputation, then learn to keep your promises. The payback will be huge!

Ship it out the door

I think Seth means this in an office environment. It would definitely fit the entrepreneur community as well. Get things off your table and get them out the door. You need to learn to make a decision and move on with things that are important for your business. If you keep piling them on your table then nothing gets done. Therefore you will not succeed.

I hope this little information helps you succeed. Please share your views in the comment section below.

Understanding and making proper commitments and keeping them are important to your success. If you commit to something, you should follow through until it is completed. If you are new at building your reputation for your online business, it is important that you fulfill the mission of your online business. Many people today make commitments that they can’t fulfill themselves. If you want to grow your authority, then you must focus on keeping your commitments.

The cost of “not keeping” your commitment could be much higher than you expect. Make time to understand what is at stake before you make a commitment. You need to fully analyze the implications of you not keeping the commitment. What will be the financial implications and what will be the social implications of you not keeping the commitment? Sometimes the financial implications are something you can live with but the social implications are something that would be of higher cost; something that you can’t win back easily.

Anyone who desires to be successful with their business must be like a fine craftsman. You must commit to excellence. A craftsman always works with care; always inspecting in finest details; and always wants to be better at what they do. In contrast, those that aren’t committed to what they do, they find excuses in their tools and other stuff for the sloppy progress they make.

Here is How You Can Manage the Discipline of Commitment

Once you make a decision to commitment to something, you must remind yourself daily of the commitment you’ve made. You need to remind yourself that you need to see this commitment through. You need to successfully complete the task at hand while life throws unnecessary things at you daily. To do this, make a note of your commitment and place it in your office where you can see it everyday or place it at home closer to a place where you would get to read it first thing every morning. By reminding yourself daily, you can refocus on the tasks required to fulfill the commitment. This way you can decide the tasks at hand everyday to achieve the commitment.

Don’t be a Quitter

You need to understand that keeping a commitment is not easy. You need to understand that you will have obstacles to overcome. You need to stay focus and you need to make the right decisions that will take you to the end. Many people fail in business because they call it quit too soon. For example, there are many people who want to make money blogging but they don’t have the patience to see it through. They setup a blog and expect to make money the second day. It doesn’t happen that way. If you setup a blog and you committed to provide quality content to readers, then continue posting quality content regularly; the money will eventually come. Don’t call it a quit early on.

Cover of the book mentioned

I am sure all of you know that in every junction, the decisions you make is essential to the success of your business. You have to make the right decisions to compete with other businesses; you have to make the right decisions to make it through the initial startup stage. You have to know the game you are playing…

Are you playing the right game?

How do you know you are playing the right game? Are you successful with your business and are you satisfied with where you are? Do you know what you need to do so you can be successful with your business? Do you know whom you need to friend with and whom you need to strategize against? Like I said in my opening paragraph, these are all the questions that go through the minds of a typical Executive or a Manager on a daily basis. You need to know at all times, if you change the way you provide a service or if you add an incentive for the customer, how will that change your game and how will it change the game for the market participants. Now who are the market participants? These are your suppliers, competitors, customers and affiliates.

I recommend you read the book “The Right Game – Use Game Theory to Shape Strategy” by Adam M. Brandenburger and Barry J. Nalebuff. The Game Theory explains the importance of focusing on others. In this book, the author uses game theory to explain and map the interdependencies among the participants in your marketplace. It is important for you to understand who is playing the game with you and what values they add to the game. If you have all of that figured out, you should be able to make strategic moves that will benefit you or even the whole industry.

For example, let’s say you operate a blog. Your blog provides information on all of the new movies as they are released. It is an established blog and you are able to get in front of the line to get real-time interview with the stars. However, there are about 5 other sites that do the same thing. One day you woke up and decided you want to change the game. You want to gain a higher market share and provide more information. So you take the steps to understand the current marketplace. You spend time understanding the value provided by other sites. You spend time understanding the audience. You spend time understanding the success rate of getting an interview with a star.

Once you have all of this information in front of you, you can use Game Theory to map it all out. You can give points to each possible move. Your moves can be to go aggressive or try to partner with other sites. Your aggressive move can be something like offering an incentive for your customer such as free movie passes or coup0ns for snacks. You can also give your customers access to live interviews. Introduce something that will put your competitors at a disadvantage. Before you do this, you need to figure out how they will react to this. Are your competitors large enough to provide the same kind of incentives? In your mapping exercise, you need to map all possible scenarios so you can figure out the best move that will either place you in a better position than where you are today or it will place the hold industry in a better position. You probably won’t want to make a move that will hurt your business.

Once you map it all out, you should be able to decide which move will make you even more successful. This sort of exercise is much better than holding status quo. As an Executive or a Manager, you need to always think about this. You need to know the game you are playing and you need to know what moves you have in your fingertips at all times.

You should read my previous post on “getting to know your competitions.” This story should help you identify your opponents well.

Please let me know if you have any views on this. Thank you.

Now that you are here and reading my post, I am sure your blog will not be one of them that fails. However, please don’t take this comment lightly. As everything in life, you have to work for it and you’ve got to rise above your competitions.

I will give you $100 US if you guess how many blogs are out there on the internet and how many new blogs are started on a daily basis. I would say there are millions of blogs out there and hundreds if not thousands of blogs emerge daily. Now, many of these blogs go unnoticed. No one hear about it and not many cares about it. However, many people will continue to try and they will continue to copy what others are doing. Of course, they will fail and move on because only a handful will survive to be successful.

Now, how do you become a successful blogger and how do you make sure your blog is successful? Well the number one recipe for blogs to be successful is to communicate with your audience.

You need to learn to write for your audience rather than writing for the sake of writing articles. Many people put together a Wordpresss blog overnight. Then they are excited about their new blog because they too believe they will be able to make the six figure income that many bloggers enjoy.

First of all, when you start a blog, please do not dream that you are about to make a six figure income right away. If it is that easy, then every blogger will be successful. I will be honest with you. I do not make much money with my blog and I am not aiming to make a six figure from this website in the short term. As I mention in my profile, this blog is to pass my time by helping others. I am making enough to pay my bills – which is really important for sustainability. You need to make enough to maintain your blog for a long time so you can improve it on a regular basis. When you maintain it for a long time and provide value added content for your audience, you will eventually make it work…

Going back to communications, you must know your audience and you must learn to communicate with your audience from the beginning. If you don’t learn to interact with your first few visitors, there is no point in continuing your blog because you do not know how to keep those visitors on your site. Don’t forget to read my previous blog post on “getting to know your visitors.”

Blogging: How To Communicate With Your Visitors?

Now picture this. You are in a football stadium and you are one of the 30,000 visitors that day. You start screaming about your new blog and start talking about your ideas and what you have to share. The person next to you start copying you and start talking about his/her website. Imagine now that the third, the fourth and everyone else next to you start doing the same thing. Now imagine more than 30% or about 10,000 fans in the stadium start to shout about their blog and their ideas. It wouldn’t make much sense to the other 70% of the audience would it? They will probably go crazy and won’t believe any one of you. They will probably start ignoring you and they will probably never want to see you again… Well it is no different on the internet. Many people are just shouting out what they have to say instead of speaking to their audience.

Now imagine that you are still in that stadium and the game won’t be over for another 2 hours. So you sit back and do some homework for 10 minutes. You first decide what you want to talk about and then you decide whom you want to talk to. All those 30% of the people are still shouting but you decided to talk directly to a few people around you and start offering them some assistance. They are now engaged. They are listening to you. They want to provide you with some feedback and contribute to your success. Now few people about 50 feet from you see a group gathering around you, so they make their way over to you… your fans are just growing because you are building a momentum and you are not just speaking, you are speaking to those people around you… before you know it, you will have hundreds of people around you compared to your counterparts who continues to shout without any results.

Well in the blogging world, this scenario holds. You will have to understand your business and then you need to know what you are offering to people. Once you have figured this out, try to leverage it by working with your audience. Talk to them individually or as a group. Gain an audience at a time and eventually you will be successful.

I would love to get your feedback on this story. I would love to know how you are doing with your blog (if you are a blogger). I would like to share your stories with my readers. Thank you in advance.

How good are you with networking? Networking is becoming more and more crucial for success in today’s interconnected world. You might be a hard worker but if you are not good at networking and making a few good friends outside your comfort zone, you will not be successful unless you invent something extraordinary.

What do I mean by the “comfort zone”?

In networking, “comfort zone” is often referred to the circle of people that you are comfortable interacting with. This could be your friends, family, co-workers and to an extent the people you may have to interact daily at your work. These are people that you can actually start a conversation with and talk about any particular topics. However, when it comes to introducing yourself to a total stranger, you are not comfortable because it is outside your “comfort zone.” If you want to be successful at networking, first you must identify your “comfort zone” and avoid spending time with that group at a party or at a get together of some sort. I am not suggesting that you don’t talk to them; I am suggesting that you limit the amount of time you spend within your comfort zone. If you go to a professional reception or a conference and spend time talking to a member from within your “comfort zone”, you are just wasting your time. You might as well have been at home instead of this event. You need to reach outside your comfort zone and connect with people.

First Step of Networking:

Networking has two important elements that run in parallel to each other. Without one, the other won’t get too far. Hence you need to work on both at the same time to be successful. In order to be successful in networking, one must give as much as they expect from others. Giving and Receiving are the two pillars; the two tracks. So giving and receiving run in parallel to each other. You must add value and give others an opportunity to expand their network as much as you want someone else to offer you the assistance to expand your network.

I can’t say that I am an expert in networking in my personal life. Two days ago, I had a chance to run into Kiefer Sutherland at a film ceremony reception that I’ve attended as part of my work. I had an opportunity to say hi to Mr. Sutherland but I didn’t really have the guts to get more than about 5 words out of me when I shook his hand. My intension wasn’t really to network with Mr. Sutherland, although I would love to know him, but I am just raising this as an example to show you that not everyone is professional at networking. You just have to continue to work at it every time you have a chance. Each time you should try a different approach. Once you get used to your own technique of saying hello to new people that you meet on a daily basis, you will see your network grow faster and faster. As an entrepreneur and as a business owner, you must remember that you network is your net worth!

Also don’t forget to read my previous article on relationship: Make a Habit to Invest In Relationships.

There are many that would argue that outsourcing during the early part of your startup is probably better. On the other hand, many would also argue that keeping it in-house and doing it all by yourself is better for you. Which one is it? Which one is better for you?

In this critical time, with tight budget and a tough financial market to raise money, this question to whether to outsource or do it in house has become more crucial than ever before. Startups with no internal staff on various core functions are struggling with this question on a daily basis to get their business off the ground.

From my experience, the answer varies from startup to startup. It varies because you need to ask yourself the question, “What are you good at doing and how much time you have for your startup?” If you answer this question honestly, you will have the answer to whether you should outsource some non-core functions or if you should manage it all within by wearing multiple hats.

You should follow this simple 5 step guide to help you answer the question. I have seen this work in the past. Throughout all of this, especially if you are going at this alone, find a mentor to guide you.

Your Numbers and Time:

Figure out how much time you have and how much money you can actually bring to the table for this startup. You need to be honest with yourself in making this assessment. This step determines the available startup capital for your startup. If you get this wrong, you will probably make the wrong decisions in the steps to follow.

Problem You Are Trying to Solve:

What is it that you are actually trying to solve with your startup? Figure out what sort of skill sets are required to complete the development work and what is required to market this product or service. Make a chart and figure out how much of this you are realistically capable of doing on your own and how much of this you will need some sort of help with – either in-house or external. You can wear multiple hats but you only have 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week, just like everyone else. Hence, when your startup heats up, you won’t have the time to manage all functions by yourself.

Financial Analysis:

This is the most crucial step. You should always spend more time here and try to run through every component of your project and compare the cost between in-house and outsource. In order to do this, take your project and divide it into individual tasks and resources required to complete each task. Then examine the time required to complete each task. Do some research using employment websites and see what you will pay for in-house staff. You will also have to add the cost of providing office space for the employees. In order to find out the cost of outsourcing, call up a few outsourcing firms and get an idea of the kind of cost and time it would require to complete your project.

Numbers speak for themselves and many times, you should be able to decide by this step whether outsourcing is for you or not.

Make or Break a Project – Find the Right Talent:

Many startups are not the experts in managing staff or directly dealing with another outsourcing firm. Hence when the pressure mounts to get additional help, they tend to make the wrong decisions. Even if they make the right decision to outsource or to hire staff, they end up hiring the wrong employee or outsource the work to a firm that does not deliver. You can make or break a project with your choice. Timing is crucial for any startups so make sure you do your homework to either hire the right employee for your office or find the right firm to outsource. Don’t cheap out on either one. You need to go back to the above points and see how much you can afford, then find a decent firm that can deliver for you on time or hire a professional that can help you with your startup.

Decide if Mixing Outsourcing with In-House will Work for You:

Many will find this model work for them because there are core functions that you may not want to outsource. Such core functions could be financial related or security related. Once you follow the above steps, you will be able to identify the core functions and you will also be able to identify how much money you got to play with. These two pieces of information will help you figure out what you should keep for in-house and what you should outsource.

From my experience, mixing both works well most of the time. As a founder of a new business, you tend to wear multiple hats. Hence you able to do many functions but at the same time, you will need help with tasks that are beyond your skill sets. For those tasks, I usually look for a firm that I can outsource the work to. Once you start dealing with a firm or a few, you will begin to create a relationship with some of them. You should work on this relationship because if you find the right firm, you can use them over and over again because you know they will deliver on time and on budget.

I hope this simple step by step guide to decide whether to outsource or to do it yourself works for you. If you’ve experienced this in the past, share it with our readers by leaving a comment.

How do you know if you are truly making the most of the people around you, the people you come in touch with on a regular basis and all other people you meet through social networking sites, etc?

Today I had a chance to read Martin Zwilling’s blog post “Can You Find My Contact Info in a Second?” In this particular post, Martin explains why it is so difficult to find up to date information on the people you’ve met and why the rolodex with 100 business cards doesn’t work anymore. I totally agree with him. It is very difficult to find someone’s current contact information these days. Many people are moving around from job to job and hence their contact information is changing on a regular basis. His posting made me wonder throughout the day and it made me think about my own relationships. So I wanted to share my perspective on why it is so important for you to maintain your relationships on a regular basis to not only succeed in business but also in life.

How many true friends do you have? Are you in touch with them on a daily basis? I believe many entrepreneurs don’t take this particular subject seriously before they go about starting their own new business. If you maintain your relationships, it will be one of the best tools you can tap into when you launch your new startup. In most cases, this will not cost you a penny. These are the people you can count on to provide you with some feedback for your new website, new service or a product. They are the people that can spread the words about your products and services. They are your free marketers when you are ready to launch your next startup.

However, maintaining the relationship comes with responsibility. It is not an easy task. It requires daily commitment from you to make a phone call or to send an email just to say hi. I think many of us take relationships for granted and we don’t give the attention it requires. We believe it will be there when we need it the most but forget to understand that just like us, everyone is busy as well and that old relationship does not wait around for you.

In order to maintain the relationship you need to invest in people. You need to first learn to value who they are, respect their work, respect their view and finally understand them. Understanding one another is not an easy task as well but at least if you want to build relationships to help you with your business analyze the following areas and help them along.

find out what their goal in life is

find out what they like doing the most

do they have any interests or hobbies

find out what they need help with

find out what they are working on

Many successful people find a way to keep in touch with hundreds people all the time. They don’t know much about the individuals but they have a way to keep a tiny bit of crucial information that they know will spark an interest or a conversation with their contacts. This sort of delicacy will help you go a long way in terms of building relationships. You will need to find a way to keep this information along with your contacts. Martin’s post suggests a few tools for you to try out.

In order to find this delicacy, first you need to understand the truth about people. You need to understand that at the end of the day, they are all human beings as well. They have feelings too and they want to feel important and special. You need to learn to give them what they want or lack. For example, if they want to associate with success then you should help them achieve that. If they are insecure then you give them confidence. If they don’t feel special, make them feel special by truthfully complementing about their work etc. If they are starting up a business, be the first one to lend a hand.

This is how you build a network of true online friends. This is how you build relationships in your life. If you do it right and help them along, they will be there when you need to count on them. In your niche market, you will meet a lot of people on a regular basis. Help them along and keep in touch. You will need them one day.

I hope my thoughts help your relationships. Please leave comments for others to read on how you manage your relationships and how it has helped you with your startups.

Over and over again we hear the phrase “live as if today is the last day for you.” Setting long-term goal is important but following the daily task is crucial to achieve that goal. Your daily tasks are the stepping stones for your success. If you don’t follow your daily tasks that you have set aside, the long-term goal becomes irrelevant. Are you working hard for nothing? Do you want to be efficient and use your time wisely to achieve your goals faster? Then read the rest of the article.

You need to be able to treat each day, each 24 hour block of time, as if it is your last attempt to achieve your final goal – the big dream of yours. You need to learn to make the most of today so you can begin your tomorrow with today’s success to celebrate. Each day is made up of 24 hours and that is all we got no matter what you ask for or how successful you are. So each 24 hour, the building block of time, is crucial to reach your goal.

For all of those aspiring to be successful, every new day throw at you new opportunities, new challenges and new tasks. In order to manage all of this and succeed, you need to be able to set daily priorities and make the commitment to fulfill your priorities. Today, you have hundreds of opportunities to waste your time on. Most people spend time on the internet, doing activities that are really not necessary to achieve their end goal. It may feel like it is helping you but if you don’t set your priorities, you will waste your time.

The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80-20 rule, states that by focusing your attention on the top 20 percent of your priorities, you would get an 80 percent return on your effort. So once you finish reading this article, take a piece of paper and a pen and prioritize your daily tasks. Once you do that, work on identifying the top 20 percent of the tasks that are necessary to achieve your goals. This is crucial and I will explain how you can do this in a second.

Like I said above, every new day brings new opportunities, challenges and tasks. In order to manage them efficiently, you need to give yourself enough time for planning and setting your priorities before you begin your day. You need to tell yourself if you will spend all of your time social networking with people, checking pointless emails and or working on unimportant tasks OR if you will spend maybe 80 percent of your time on what is really important to you and your business. You really need to ask yourself these questions:

What skills do I have and what is required of me everyday to make my startup successful?

What sort of daily activities would add value to my startup?

Where should I spend my time everyday so I can grow my network?

Whom should I target and spend time with in order for me to grow my network?

Whom can I delegate my lowest priorities to? Whom do I trust enough to do the work?

What have I been doing all these days that is not adding value to my startup?

If you answer the above questions, you will successfully identify your top 20 percent of your priorities. Once you do that, you will know what sort of activities you should overlook next time it jumps at you, so you could be more efficient and succeed. This really is the key to success. If you are able to identify things that you should overlook, you have managed to identify your priorities. By following your daily required priorities religiously, you will be able to achieve your goal sooner than you may have planned for.

Most of you will know from my previous post that I am a big fan of learning from failures. Revisit your daily tasks and see if it is working for you. If you don’t try, you won’t know. Tweak it as you go along and make it even better. Who knows, you may end up finding a few extra hours in a day once you’ve prioritize the daily tasks.

Follow your plan religiously and learn to delegate if new things are thrown at you that you believe will not help you achieve your goal. Many startups fail because they don’t know how to delegate. Instead of focusing on important tasks, the founder of a startup spends time coding and cleaning their website. Well I am sure you know that coding and cleaning websites is a very tedious job and it takes time. If you fall into this trap, you will not get out of it. Then it will all be over before you know it…

Like my questions said above, make sure you identify and find people that you want to network with on a daily basis. Invest your time wisely into networking with the right people. Don’t let others waste your time and take advantage of your time to grow their business. In order to do this, you have to be in control of your time.

Take advantage of the 24 hours you got in front of you. Do what is necessary for you to succeed and stop doing things that is not helping you.

I hope this little bit of information on prioritization helps you achieve success for your startups. If you follow similar method or any other methods to prioritize your day, please leave a comment so others can learn from you.

Everyday, thousands of individuals are taking part in some form of money making activities on the internet – these are our young entrepreneurs who are trying to take control of their life and potentially quit their job. However, many end up not achieving their dreams because simply they just don’t have the passion, the courage or the determination to succeed. As you all know, if you don’t make the commitment to make changes in your life, you will not succeed.

If you have the following three characteristics, you can be a successful entrepreneur.

Commitment and Determination

As I mentioned again and again in my previous postings, if you want to be successful in business, you need to make sure you are determined to succeed and that you are committed to doing that. You have to be willing to sacrifice pay and learn to work many hours before you begin to enjoy the endless benefits.

Passion

You need to be passionate about your business. You need to love it and embrace it like it is your child. Then only you can feel good putting in those late nights or the extra effort required to succeed.

Courage

You need to have the courage to fail; you need to have the courage to try again; you need to have the courage to test every imaginable thing to succeed for an online startup. Many successful entrepreneurs have failed before. However, they learn from their previous venture and do it better next time.

The above three characteristics pretty much define an entrepreneur who has the passion to succeed. If you are one of them then you don’t really have to burn through cash to make money on the internet. There are endless opportunities out there to make money – from affiliate marketing, to blogging, to article writing, to web design or to marketing. However, if you want to make millions, you will have to spend money upfront.

Today with Social Networking Websites, you can take advantage of how fast you can grow. If you believe you have missed out opportunities in the past, well this is the time to catch up. There are tons of Social Networking Websites that will allow you to leapfrog years of experience and grow your target market. If you have the above three strengths, then go for it. Keep an eye on my blog for daily tips to where you can look for opportunities.
